TYPES OF TRIBES IN GARO HILLS

Garo Hills is home to several indigenous tribes, each with their unique cultural identity and traditions. The three main tribes found in the region are:

• Garo Tribe: The Garo tribe is the largest indigenous community in the region, and the hills are named after them. The tribe is known for its unique traditional costumes, which are adorned with intricate embroidery and beadwork. They have their language, known as Garo, which is of Tibeto-Burman origin. The tribe is predominantly Christian and is known for its vibrant cultural festivals.

• A'chik Tribe: The A'chik tribe, also known as the Garo Hills tribe, is found mainly in the eastern part of Garo Hills. They are known for their traditional weaving and basket-making skills, which have been passed down through generations. The A'chik tribe also has its language, known as A'chik, which is similar to the Garo language.

 

• Hajong Tribe: The Hajong tribe is a smaller indigenous community found in Garo Hills. They are believed to have migrated to the region from present-day Bangladesh several centuries ago. The Hajong tribe is known for their unique bamboo craft, including basketry and mat weaving. They also have their language, known as Hajong, which is a dialect of Bengali.

 

In addition to these three main tribes, there are also several smaller indigenous communities found in Garo Hills, including the Chakma, Koch, and Rabha communities. These communities have their unique cultures and traditions and contribute to the rich cultural heritage of the region
